These
are the auricular surfaces from Skeleton 1188. They show subchondral bone
destruction, often associated with old age. The results of the assessment
of the pubic symphyses, which also show age related changes, confirmed
that this individual was likely to have reached at least the age of 50
before he died.
The cyst burial from
the chapter house, therefore, was likely to have contained the remains
of an old aged male. His height was reconstructed from measurements of
his legs (femur and tibia) and this showed that he was about 5'8"
(1.75m) tall, slightly above average for the medieval period. |
