For purposes of forensic identification post mortem image enhancement and facial reconstruction are powerful visual tools. Facial reconstruction is also valuable for enhancing our visualisation of remains from archaeological and historical contexts, for example, as part of educational exhibitions.

In a recently deceased case, or where there is sufficient soft tissue preservation, post mortem image enhancement is used, producing an image suitable for use in publicity.

With only skeletal remains available, each facial reconstruction is produced based on tissue depth measurements and the unique, specific features of the skull.
